We are proud to have supported the Royal Naval Association’s Thriving Together programme last year, which has been instrumental in bringing serving personnel and veterans together to build camaraderie and encourage resilience throughout all stages of life.
Thanks to a grant from Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity, the RNA has been able to deliver unforgettable experiences, including walking weekends in Wales and the Lake District, as well as outdoor activity weekends in Dorset and Devon. These events are designed to foster bonds, improve mental health, and provide a safe space for participants to tackle personal challenges and rediscover their confidence.
Mark ‘Whiskey’ Walker, a Navy veteran from Seaham, County Durham, who served from 1992 to 2020 and has been a member of the RNA for the past four years, shared his gratitude for the programme:
“I had a wonderful time with a cracking bunch of shipmates. I haven’t laughed so heartily for a long time. The weekend proved Once Navy, Always Navy.”
Mark’s group enjoyed hiking up Pen-y-Fan in the Brecon Beacons and trekking to the Neath waterfalls. In the weeks that followed, a group of women undertook the same challenge, and many have already pledged to return next year to continue the fun and friendship.
One particularly moving moment came during the Dorset Bushcraft weekend, where a participant shared:
“My father and brother drowned at sea. I haven’t been able to swim in the sea until now. Thank you so much for your kind encouragement. It has been wonderful to have such supportive people around me, and I really feel like I have tackled some demons this weekend.”
It is hugely positive to see the important impact of these initiatives. The 2025 programme will kick off with a cookery day in Portsmouth in March, followed by surfing in Devon in May, more walking adventures in Wales, Scottish expeditions, and much more.
RNRMC remains committed to helping the RNA deliver valuable experiences, ensuring that those who serve in the Royal Navy, Royal Marines and Royal Fleet Auxilliary past and present, receive the care and support they deserve.
