Following on from the excitement of last week’s HMS Collingwood Field Gun competition for the sought-after Brickwoods Trophy, the Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) was delighted to attend this year’s final of the Junior Leaders’ Field Gun (JLFG) competition today.
Huge congratulations to this year’s winning team, BAE Systems A Team, who proudly accepted the winner’s trophy presented by the Chair of the Royal Navy Field Gun Executive Committee, Commodore Steve Bolton. BAE’s A Team came out on top in a final which saw them take on Itchen College, the Royal Artillery, BAE Submarines, Victory Squadron and the Barbarians.
With funding of £10,000 provided by RNRMC, the JLFG competition is aimed at Phase 2 trainees from all three services, along with University Technical Colleges, Sea Cadets and local colleges. It is designed to develop future leaders and is aimed at young people between the age of 16-24 to focus on developing their teamwork, motivation and leadership skills.
Each team consisted of 18 individuals with very limited or no previous experience of field gun. Every individual had a specific task in the crew, working in a disciplined and uniformed manner to be the quickest team on show.
The competition was established in 2006 and is designed to build camaraderie within the naval service to help develop future leaders. This fantastic team building experience gives all participants a real sense of pride and achievement at being involved in such a prestigious competition.
The eleven teams taking part in this year’s event were: BAE Systems A Team, BAE Systems B Team, BAE Systems Submarines, HMS Raleigh, Itchen College, the Royal Artillery, Siskin Division (HMS Sultan), SMQ North, Victory Squadron, UTC Portsmouth and the Barbarians (made up of members of each of the other teams).
