Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) was honoured to be one of the Charities of the Day at the thrilling Navy v RAF clash in the Inter Service Championship held at cinch Stadium, Franklins Gardens today.

The Inter Service Championship has long been a showcase of military tradition and athletic excellence, with its three-way rugby rivalry now firmly embedded in the fabric of British military sport. The Royal Navy set the benchmark early, capturing the inaugural title under the leadership of England fly-half Dave Davies — a victory that laid the foundation for decades of competitive spirit. That same drive extends beyond the men’s game, with the Royal Navy’s senior women’s team playing a key role in the development of women’s rugby since the introduction of the Women’s Inter Service Championship in 2003.

Speaking from the stadium, Hilary Hesbrook, RNRMC’s Senior Community Engagement Officer, said:

It was wonderful to be part of such an electric atmosphere! We are deeply grateful to all the supporters who came by to chat, show their support, and give so generously. You are all champions in our eyes. The funds raised today will help us continue providing vital support to serving and former personnel of the Royal Navy, as well as their families.

Air Cdre Al Roberts, Chair of Navy v RAF Match Committee, added:

“Charities such as the RAF Benevolent Fund and RNRMC play a massive role for current and former personnel and their families, and by enabling them to raise much-needed funds we can contribute to the well-being of thousands of our colleagues.”

Results

The Navy Women delivered a determined and competitive performance from start to finish, but were ultimately outpaced by a well-organized RAF side, who came away with a 36–10 victory.

The Navy Men entered the field as reigning champions and were met with a spirited challenge from the RAF in a thrilling, hard-fought contest. In a physically intense encounter, the Navy Men held their ground and retained the cup with a 27–17 win.

RNRMC extends its congratulations to both the men’s and women’s squads for their commitment, determination, and sportsmanship. It was an afternoon that not only celebrated rugby, but the enduring spirit of those who serve.
