Empowering Naval Charities Through Long-Term Partnerships

General

In 2024, the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) awarded a total of £1,713,200 in the third and final year of its three-year funding agreements with four key partner organisations. These charities — the Royal Naval Benevolent Trust, Naval Children’s Charity, Sailors’ Children’s Society, and RMA – The Royal Marines Charity — each play a vital role in delivering direct support to serving personnel, veterans, and their families.

The funding enabled a wide range of welfare support. The Royal Naval Benevolent Trust offered grants for essential needs such as medical costs and household furnishings, as well as subsidised housing and care for older veterans. The Naval Children’s Charity continued to support children facing hardship, awarding an average of 244 grants per quarter and expanding support in Scotland and the South West. The Sailors’ Children’s Society provided holistic support to families coping with traumatic life events, with Royal Naval families accounting for 60% of those helped. Meanwhile, RMA – The Royal Marines Charity addressed both preventative and reactive welfare needs, supporting individuals and families across the full spectrum of service life.

Monitoring returns submitted quarterly helped RNRMC and Greenwich Hospital better understand areas of greatest need and assess the impact of the funding. In preparation for the next funding cycle starting in 2025, RNRMC introduced a new application process in collaboration with Greenwich Hospital. Organisations submitted updated bids via an online portal, which were reviewed by the Charity Committee in January 2025 to determine future support.
