This past weekend, the HMS Vengeance and HMS Anson decks were alive with laughter, joy, and the strong sense of camaraderie that defines the Royal Navy community.
The Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC), in collaboration with The Submarine Family, was proud to support these special family days with a generous grant of just over £4,000. These events provided a unique opportunity for the families of our dedicated service members to experience life aboard these remarkable submarines and to enjoy a day filled with memorable activities.
Aboard HMS Vengeance
HMS Vengeance, a Vanguard-class submarine, opened its hatches to the families of its crew, offering them an unforgettable day. The event featured a range of activities designed to entertain and educate. Families toured the submarine, gaining insight into the daily lives and duties of the submariners. Children and adults alike marvelled at the complex machinery and the operational precision required to run a vessel of such strategic importance.
Activities included interactive demonstrations of the submarine’s equipment, games for children, and a communal meal where families and crew members could bond over shared experiences. The smiles on the faces of both the crew and their loved ones were a testament to the success of the day. The grant from the RNRMC and The Submarine Family was instrumental in making this event a reality.
Chief Petty Officer Davis who played a key role in organising the Family’s Day was delighted to be able to show his own family round the submarine.
He said: “Families play a vital role in the deployment and support of HM Submarines and are just as key to operational success as the sailors onboard.”
It is important that they feel involved and see where their loved ones spend their time when deployed at sea. It also gives our sailors the opportunity to say thank you to our families, whose support is vital in maintaining the morale of personnel onboard.
Aboard HMS Anson
Similarly, HMS Anson, one of the latest Astute-class submarines, hosted its own family day, welcoming aboard the families of its crew members. Families were able to see first-hand the living conditions and the sophisticated operations that their loved ones manage on a daily basis.
After they toured the boat, the families were taken to the Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club Clubhouse where they had the opportunity to meet organisations that support HMS Anson. It was also here that two Personnel were presented with their dolphins following the completion of their SMQ.
The Importance of Family Days
Family days like these are vital in maintaining the morale and well-being of Royal Navy personnel. They offer a rare glimpse into the challenging and often unseen world of submarine service, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation among family members. Such events strengthen the bonds between the crew and their families, reinforcing the support network that is essential for the mental and emotional health of our service members.
The RNRMC and The Submarine Family are committed to supporting the Royal Navy community, and the success of these family days aboard HMS Vengeance and HMS Anson is a shining example of this dedication. The grant of over £4,000 was an investment in the happiness and cohesion of the naval family, and the positive feedback from all participants underscores its value.
