On 5th February 2025, HMS Temeraire in Portsmouth hosted a truly unique event that brought together the crews of the Royal Navy’s aircraft carriers for a day of spirited competition and camaraderie. The inaugural ‘Battle of the Carriers’ saw over 300 service personnel from HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales go head-to-head across various sporting disciplines, competing for the ultimate bragging rights in this prestigious showcase.

Truly a day to remember - Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) was delighted to be able to support such a memorable occasion.

The day’s activities ranged from fast-paced football matches to the intense rivalry of tug-of-war, with each event pushing competitors to demonstrate their physical prowess, determination, and team spirit. Points were scored in each discipline, building excitement and anticipation as the final results approached. Whether on the pitch, the court, or the sidelines cheering for teammates, sailors took part with enthusiasm and good humour.

"We’re incredibly proud to support initiatives like this which provide sailors with the opportunity to connect and represent their ships with pride. The success of this event truly highlights the power of community and shared purpose, and we look forward to being part of many more such occasions in the future."

Anne Carr, Head of Grants at RNRMC

The Battle of the Carriers was more than just a competition; it was an opportunity for sailors to step back from their relentless operational tempo and enjoy a well-deserved day of respite. The mental and emotional benefits of events like this cannot be overstated - allowing individuals to recharge, make new acquaintances, and represent their ships in a positive and light-hearted environment.

The event was highly contested building team cohesion, morale and more importantly a fun environment for people to thrive, relax and enjoy some downtime. Sport is a fundamental part of service life, and it is important we provide these opportunities to further enhance the benefits that come from such events and provides a reset from busy day jobs"
