Will Davies, a Chief Petty Officer in the Weapons Engineering branch has been awarded a Herbert Lott award. His tireless work and ability to solve the intricate and individual IT issues emerging during each new software installation has unequivocally improved the lives of engineers at sea at a critical time for retention.
He started working at Defence Equipment and Support in Abbey Wood in February 2023 as part of the Platform Material Assessment, Assurance & Training (PMAAT) team, which provide a range of services to operational ships, shore establishments and DE&S Platform Teams. Before that, he was a Sensors Head of Group at the Fleet Support Unit in Portsmouth. He also spent a considerable amount of time at sea, serving as the Weapons Engineering Officer and Communications and Information Systems Manager on HMS Severn and HMS Medway.
As part of an ongoing upgrade program, a new software had been introduced offering new features and improvements aimed at reducing the administrative workload for engineers and enhancing their overall experience in the Royal Navy. However, the rollout process proved complex and with his extensive experience and knowledge of onboard IT systems, CPO Davies became the leading expert in installing this new software. His determination played a key role in making this important upgrade possible.
Despite the challenges and personal disruptions, he faced during his transition between sea assignments, CPO Davies took on the responsibility for all upgrade installations across the surface fleet, both in the UK and world-wide.
