Steph Wilson, RN Veteran, Military Spouse (husband is serving RN) shares with us her experience with Neurodiversity.

We are a neurodiverse family, which includes my autistic son. I also work and volunteer in advocacy for autistic and otherwise neurodivergent people.

Ironically where lack of empathy and a rigidity in thinking have long been thought of as hallmarks of an autistic individual; making connections or receiving adequate support are difficult due to a real lack of empathy for the lived experiences of neurodivergent individuals and an unwillingness to change support systems to meet needs "because its always been done this way.

My son would say that for him, the most challenging aspect has been schools that don't understand.

My son would say that for him, the most challenging aspect has been schools that don't understand. The frequent moves that he has undertaken as part of service family life mean that he has experienced some really awful schools and conversely some wonderful schools that have worked to understand and meet his needs.
