Saving lives is what we do. But Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity and its supporters save lives too. They are an essential part of the naval community that provides the care we often need. It is so reassuring to know that there’s support when we need it.
I have proudly served with the Queen Alexandra’s Royal Naval Nursing Service for 23 years. I recently had a life-changing medical diagnosis but thanks to Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity and its wonderful supporters, I am now blessed with the chance to serve for even longer.
When I first became a nurse in the Royal Navy, I had no idea where my career would take me. I ended up serving in Iraq. It was often scary there, but we saved lives and I feel blessed to have had that experience.
Three years ago, I faced my greatest battle yet when doctors found a tumour on my second rib. I recovered, but over the next year my hips declined. So last April, I had them both replaced.
I am strong, but it has been difficult, emotionally as well as physically. Luckily, I was able to go on art retreats funded by Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity. Having that headspace to shut down and think about nothing but what’s going on with me, and talking about it with other people, has been profoundly important.
I am now back, doing the job I love. And I am looking forward to the future with my wife and daughter.
In 2024, Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity were able to help more than 135,000 people like Alison. Every single one of them has their own story. Your support is changing so many lives. Thank you, your support is always appreciated.
